Theaterschiff Tau

The theaterboats were by way of being a German institution, but here we see the Berlin one (Tau, in this designation) covered with graffiti prior to its eventual scrapping in 2012.

Treptower Statue

The monumentally bonkers Treptower Park in Berlin, Germany, a Soviet-constructed monument to fallen war dead (and the Soviet war effort). This particular statue is by sculptor Yevgeny Vuchetich, and is "a 12-m tall statue of a Soviet soldier with a sword holding a German child, standing over a broken swastika." (Wikipedia.) This is apparently a reference to real-world events.

The Lock Bridge

Romantic couples have developed a tradition of leaving labelled and locked padlocks affixed to poles in various cities. Paris is perhaps the best known, but Amsterdam has not escaped. This bridge, known as Staalmeestersbrug, the bridge that crosses the Groenburgwal, is (or was) a very popular location for this, since it also has the beautiful Zuiderkerk tower (1614) at the end of the canal. Apparently the council doesn't like this and removes them periodically (and the bridge may be being refurbished at the moment anyway) so don't get too attached to this statement of love...

Whitby Abbey Overlook

The town of Whitby in Yorkshire, U.K., has some family connections for me as well as being a place laden with history and culture. This ruined cathedral is perhaps the jewel in the crown: Whitby Abbey, founded in the 600s but a victim of the dissolution of the monasteries in the 1500s, and fell into ruin thereafter. Here we see the ruin reflected in the mysterious pool of water at its base.
