Cliffs of Insanity

Most people see the Cliffs of Moher, Co. Clare, from the notoriously dangerous cliff-side walk, or via the film The Princess Bride, where they are used as the establishing shot for the Cliffs of Insanity. On this occasion, I took a boat trip out to view the cliffs from a more unusual angle, flat and ahead. The sea was lively and the boat was pitching back and forth, and the sky was overcast, so it was extremely lucky I was able to get anything usable at all. Here we see the cliffs themselves, people clustered along the walk, the top of the cliffhouse peeping above the summit, and the waves crashing in against the seastacks. A bird flies across to complete the scene.

Smokestacks and Docks

Dollan Lavacave, Grindavík

In theory this is just an entrance to a lavacave in Iceland. In practice, I think we all understand that this is an entrance to the underworld, and nothing you can do or say will convince me otherwise. Furthermore, it's the most convenient entrance I've ever seen, with easy wooden stairs, a handrail, and its and close to a relaxing lagoon you can take Persephone to when you've come back for the summer.

French Rural Pastels

A balloon flight over French countryside in the Loire Valley produced this strange kind of abstract art. Its the hazy unreality of our lazy drift along in the winds currents, combined with the angle of the setting sun, and the beautiful colours of the late summer in wine-producing country that makes this picture special for me.

Down The Drain

The ominously-named Silent Valley reservoir in Northern Ireland stores water for County Down and Belfast, a considerable proportion of the population of Northern Ireland. Obviously the water levels in a reservoir can rise and fall, and in theory this dark overflow pipe helps to regulate them -- but for some reason I wouldn't like to be water falling down it.

Lighthouse to the Stars

On the South Bull Wall after sunset one evening, I had intended to capture pictures of lit-up ferries going past. I got some, but was not impressed. Prompted by a friend, I turned my camera back and up towards Poolbeg Lighthouse. The moon was on fire with reflected sunlight; the stars glittered in the sky, and the red lighthouse loomed above them all.
