At sunset, a large sun hangs over the coastline at Ringsend and the South Great Wall, creating silhouettes everywhere.

Hurricane Ridge

Hurricane Ridge, in Washington State's Olympic National Park, gets its name from the intense winds and snowfall that batter it more or less all the year round. On my trip there, I saw none of that; instead, the middle layer of the drive up was wreathed in a combination of cloud and fog, glorious to experience, but hard to photograph. This chap, however, photographed near the visitors center at the top, was absolutely nonchalant about the humans buzzing around him and sauntered around the grounds unbothered. I used a tight focus shot to show him looking across the Cascades -- his mountains -- as one might pause before deciding in which direction to set off in next.

Basilica in Shadow

The basilica of Sant'Apollinare close to Ravenna is about 1500 years old. Most of the critical and traveller attention is focused on the sumptuous decorations and the almost legendary history of the place. But wandering around, I was taken by this arrangement of what I think is a confession box with the sun sharply illuminating it. Imperial purple, curves and crosses, and hint of decay in the spider's web caught my attention for a moment redolent of history.

The Marquisette

The village of Gourdon in the south of France attracts visitors all over the world, and understandably so given its commanding view over the countryside and the old-world chic of the town behind the walls. But here, I focus on three windows above a shop (La Marquisette, depuis 1954) and the figure of a grand-mère somewhat alarmedly looking into the street below.

The Stanford Dish
